Ryanair has advised passengers to avoid wearing one popular type of clothing to ensure comfort and safety. Medical experts have backed the move and warn that restrictive garments can significantly increase the risk of serious health conditions such as deep vein thrombosis during flights.

  1. Ryanair is encouraging passengers to opt for loose, comfortable clothing instead of restrictive items like figure-hugging jeans. While there is no legally binding dress code, the airline suggests that tight garments can compromise passenger well-being.
  2. A voiceover the airline posted on its TikTok account said: “Thank you for flying Ryanair,” while text on the video states “It’s 2026, let’s stop travelling in jeans,” with “please” added in the caption. “What is wrong with jeans? Please explain,” one viewer asked – to which the airline replied: “What’s right with them?”
  3. Medical experts warn that wearing leggings and tight denim reduces the blood’s ability to flow efficiently through the legs. This restriction is particularly dangerous when sitting for the extended periods of time required for air travel.
  4. Prolonged inactivity during flights can cause blood to pool in the lower limbs, increasing the risk of deep vein thrombosis. This serious condition involves the formation of a blood clot within a deep vein of the leg.
  5. Health professionals note that extremely tight clothing can also lead to more obscure medical issues like compartment syndrome. These conditions can result in severe leg pain and long-term physical complications if not addressed.
  6. Passengers wearing restrictive outfits may experience Meralgia paresthetica, a condition characterised by persistent numbness and tingling. Choosing breathable, loose-fitting fabrics can help maintain proper circulation and prevent these painful symptoms.
  7. The airline’s guidance aims to improve the overall travel experience by prioritising physical health over fashion trends. By following these simple clothing suggestions, travellers can reduce their risk of experiencing a medical emergency in the air.
