Michelle Morgan Harrison emphasizes the importance of tactile materials: ‘I love pairing tailored upholstery with boucle, nubby wools, or velvet, then grounding the palette with warm wood tones and natural stone. Even something as simple as an oversized throw, a sculptural lamp, or a rug with a tactile weave can shift a modern room from minimal to inviting.’
‘Modern pieces get a bad rap for being spare and uncomfortable,’ says interior designer Bethany Adams. ‘But you can add instant coziness to any piece with pillows and throws. And definitely consider soft and luxurious fabrics like velvet and mohair instead of leather for a sumptuous take on modern.’
