How Mina Starsiak Hawk’s Good Bones Design Style Has Evolved (& If We’re Loving It)

When it comes to design and décor choices, we all have different phases and eras of our personal interior style. Some may end up regrettable, some a perfectly nostalgic reminder of the larger trends of the time, and still others will manage to be forgettable enough to slip through the cracks. No one can escape these evolutions of style, it seems — not even a professional interior designer like HGTV’s Mina Starsiak Hawk, host of the hit home makeover show “Good Bones.”

Before the retirement of her former co-host and mother, Karen Laine, Starsiak Hawk’s style appeared to proudly display warm bohemian themes and aged, rustic charm. Judging by the star’s recent lake house renovation, however, she has been significantly influenced by today’s very modern all-white home décor trends. Did any morsel of Starsiak Hawk’s previous style survive this transformation? Upon first glance, it doesn’t seem so. Let’s take a look at how this designer’s style went from warm and unique to stripped and simplistic.

Bold to bland: Mina Starsiak Hawk’s style transformation

The best (or worst) part about having your design style emerge and evolve in a public format is that the full history of your past, present, and future design choices remain archived for all to see. In Mina Starsiak Hawk’s case, all we need to do to get familiar with her “Good Bones” style is to review a few of the transformations she facilitated on the show. In Season 4, for instance, Mina Starsiak Hawk and Karen Laine renovated a historic home in very sad shape. The reveal showed a transformation that included rich brown leather furniture, dark refinished original woodwork, a colorful warm-toned rug, and rustic pops of gilded gold and brass (via YouTube).

In Season 3, the hosts build a new home on an empty lot. They create a modern open floor plan filled with bohemian touches like frayed rugs, colorful art, and warm-toned patterns in rich reds and oranges. A brown sofa made of leather is again used to foster a cozy, welcoming vibe (via YouTube). In major contrast to this warm, fun, and creative style are the photos Starsiak Hawk recently posted on Instagram of her own personal lake house renovation. The reveal depicts stark white walls and furniture peppered with beige accessories, light wood tones, and small pops of gold, black, and brown. In comparison to the colorful and unique homes featured on “Good Bones,” the space feels minimalistic and simple. Only time will tell what style the designer will embrace in the future.
